When an elementary school is set amongst the backdrop of a major university, the bar for education excellence is already set at the top. So when leaders from P.K. Yonge Developmental Research School, a K-12 learning facility at the University of Florida, came to BRPH seeking to be on the leading edge of public education in Florida, we listened first and then got to work raising the bar.
This revolutionary school has no classrooms. Learning happens in interior open plan spaces configured by furniture; 6 exterior project areas; 10 resource rooms for group instruction; 10 supplementary instruction spaces for small group work and two skills labs. There is also a specialized space, the Davinci Studio, for creative science and art for the intermediate students.
In combination with initial plans for the school itself, we also supported PKY's future growth and program development by providing recommendations for future buildings, building locations, and site infrastructure.
P.K. Yonge was a collaborative design project that involved all sectors of the community, city government, school and university in design charrettes in the development of the master plan and throughout the design of the elementary school building.
