Harrison High School – Freshman Academy offers something many schools don't. This unique educational model houses only one grade - ninth grade (freshman). This approach has been proven to help students learn in a smaller environment.
To create this concept, renovations were done to an existing high school building including re-flooring corridors, classrooms and renovating an existing theater. A dramatic three-story commons area provides the main focal point of the building and brings daylight through the heart of the building.
While the facility houses one grade, its functions are numerous. There are six biology rooms and 2 general science rooms, along with 29 other general purpose classrooms and labs throughout the building. A new choral suite to encourage creativity includes a large rehearsal room for the full chorus and six smaller practice rooms. All practice rooms are acoustically isolated and designed to optimize the sound of the performers. A full cafeteria and kitchen are co-located on the first floor.
Energy efficient mechanical economizers, along with sunscreens, were added to assist with life cycle utility costs of the building. Solar light tubes bring natural daylight to internal science labs located on the interior of the third floor.
